At the Dag van de Constructeur (Structural Engineer's Day) it also came up in the context of AI. If you can create your input faster, you can simply investigate more options as well. So you can optimise the design of your structures. And that is of course also important in the context of sustainability.

Struct4U is already responding to this new trend. We are therefore very proud to tell you that from now on you can parametrise your structures completely and easily. There are 2 options.

  1. With the programming language Python: By using Python you can take on anything and generate the most complex 2D and 3D structures. We have developed an open source BuildingPy library, which we make available to you free of charge together with numerous examples.
  2. With Excel: We do notice that many structural engineers find programming in Python rather complicated after all. Excel, on the other hand, they know well, of course. That is why we have made that possible too. With Excel, too, you can quickly generate the most common 2D and 3D structures. And in Excel as well we have already made many examples, which we also make available to you free of charge.

We notice that there is a lot of interest in this. We therefore expect that our customers will create parametric structures and make them available. In time we will jointly have a library that everyone can use.

We are organising a training on this subject! Parametric design with Excel and Python

  • When: Thursday 4 July, 13:00-17:00.
  • Location: In person in Zwijndrecht or online via MS Teams.
  • Costs: €325 excl. VAT.

Very interesting for all kinds of structural engineers in various industries. After this training you can create parametric structures yourself. For example:

  • Parametric beam grids in (serial) housing construction
  • Timber roof structures, rafter roofs, valley rafters
  • Hall construction: steel truss girders
  • Standard cases of water accumulation
  • Plates
  • Steel connections in 3D

It is 'hands on'. So no lectures, but getting to work yourself with your own laptop or desktop. If you do not have a laptop available, we will provide a computer.

Excel sheet with the parameters of a floor on piles (pile spacing, punching head, edge beam, loads) next to the generated 3D model

Python code for an IPE600 castellated beam, next to its 3D model and the calculated displacements in XFEM4U

Presentation to a seated audience, with a parametric roof truss on the screen and a Struct4U banner on the left
