Version numbers run ahead of the calendar: XFEM4U 2027-04-02 came out on 4 August 2026. The release notes list each change, often with the help-desk number behind it. Δ counts releases whose notes describe a change that can alter the results of an unchanged model.

3Methods

Methods and analysis types

As described in the manuals and the release notes.

XFEM4U

  • 3D frames of beam elements, analysed first-order (geometrically linear) or second-order (geometrically non-linear). With a Eurocode steel or timber check switched on, the analysis is always second-order.
  • Global sway imperfections to EN 1993-1-1, 5.3.2(3)a are applied automatically in +dx and −dx, so every ULS combination is calculated twice. Member imperfections (5.3.2(3)b) are not modelled; members are checked to 6.3 with the buckling length equal to the member length (5.2.2(7)b).
  • Plates, slabs and walls with automatic meshing, analysed first-order only.
  • ANSI/AISC 360-16: the Direct Analysis Method (Section C1.1, LRFD) on a second-order analysis with initial imperfections.
  • Earthquake (NL): response spectrum to NPR 9998, with natural frequencies by the Rayleigh method and seismic load cases in x and y.
  • Beams on an elastic foundation and tension-only or compression-only members are solved iteratively in the load combinations.

XFrame2D

  • 2D frames, first-order or second-order. With a Eurocode check switched on, always second-order with imperfections; global tilt is applied in two directions.
  • Member imperfections are not modelled; members are checked with the buckling length equal to the member length.
  • Beams on an elastic foundation and tension-only or compression-only members are solved iteratively in the load combinations only, from version 2027-05-01.
  • Up to 1,000 nodes, 2,000 members, 250 load cases and 250 combinations, with 15 load cases per combination. Node joints are linear springs.

XBeam2D

  • Beams on supports and elastic beds, analysed geometrically linear.
  • Concrete deflection from the M-N-κ diagram (physically non-linear), and long-term deflection with creep for concrete and timber.
  • Chessboard (pattern) loading of variable loads, with the load cases and combinations generated, from version 2027-03-01.
  • Concrete deflections are not calculated for beams on an elastic foundation or on springs.

XConstruct

  • Section and detail checks for the forces you enter: steel connections and column bases, concrete sections with the M-N-κ diagram, concrete columns, punching, timber members, masonry and pile bearing capacity.
  • NEN-EN editions with the Dutch national annex only.
  • Many calculations in one project file, recalculated on every change.

6Limitations

Known limitations

  • XFEM4U analyses frames second-order; plates and walls are analysed first-order only.
  • Member imperfections are not modelled (see Methods).
  • XBeam2D is geometrically linear and does not calculate concrete deflections for beams on an elastic foundation or on springs.
  • XConstruct uses the Dutch national annex only.
  • XFrame2D and XBeam2D: up to 1,000 nodes and 2,000 members; node joints are linear springs.
  • The XFrame2D timber sample report states that snow loads for multi-span roofs (EN 1991-1-3, 5.3.4, Figure 5.4) are not taken into account.
  • The programs run on 64-bit Windows only; the Word add-in needs Word for Windows (desktop).
  • The published sample reports date from November 2022 (version 2023.1).
7Verify

How to verify a result

Each check prints its clause, the formula, the values filled in and the result against its limit, so a result can be rechecked by hand. The verification page shows a transcribed report page and the steps.
